Bhutan Bans Plastic Bags

Posted on Mon, 06/08/2009 - 19:25

The country of Bhutan first introduced a plastic bag ban in 1999.

This ban was further reinforced in 2005. Due to the difficulty in implementing the ban, the country reintroduced the ban again in May 2009.

In addition to a Gross Domestic Product measurement, Bhutan also measures the Gross Domestic Happiness of its people. The ban on plastic bags was originally due to the fact that the government felt that the waste created from plastic bags was contributing negatively to its citizens’ happiness.

nice post

It is a god decision by the Bhutan government. Most nations and organisation are doing something similar now. Hope you are following these rules. That is more important. Many thanks for posting it here. Do keep up the great work.

Instead of reintroducing it

Instead of reintroducing it every couple of years they should think of something to make people respect this ban.

well I don't know if this has

well I don't know if this has any effect on people's happiness, but I'm curious to see the further developments

Has there been any further

Has there been any further progress on this matter? Where do we stand now?

business plan on paper bag in bhutan

for the banning the plastic bag in bhutan, i think, if we could come up an idea like manufacturing paper bag, then would be more helpful. plastic ban is not possible because we dont have subsitute for the plastic bags. this might be reason why government is not able to implement the law.
