Like a marching army, plastic bag bans are being passed in numerous California cities with more on the way. Calabasas, California is the latest city to join the march.
The City Council of the City of Calabasas voted unanimously to approve a proposed plastic bag ban ordinance. The vote took place during the Council’s meeting on Tuesday, February 1st, 2011.
As reported here on PBBR, Ordinance No. 2011-282 was modeled on the L. A. County plastic bag ban ordinance. Calabasas lies within Los Angeles County. The City Council is relying on the ordinance to fall within the scope of the County’s EIR.
Ordinance No. 2011-282 adds a new chapter to the Calabasas Municipal Code and is set to take effect at two separate dates. Retail stores with gross sales of $2 million dollars or 10,000 square feet of retail space will engage the plastic bag ban on July 1st, 2011. Smaller businesses with a limited line of food or alcohol or is considered a pharmacy or drug store will start the plastic bag ban on January 1st, 2012.
As with most other California plastic bag bans, this ordinance guarantees the consumer the right to choose; no individual rights are encroached upon. The shopper may bring any type bag of her/his choosing to use for purchases. (See “Plastic Bag Ban Guarantees Individual Rights”)
