Delaware Requires Retailers Who Use Plastic Bags to Recycle Them!

Posted on Wed, 08/19/2009 - 09:45

"House Bill 15, now law with the addition of Governor Markell's signature, calls for virtually all stores that hand out plastic grocery-type bags to customers to accept the bags back for recycling by August first of next year.

While calling it a "baby step" toward the elimination of many single use items that enter the waste stream, DNREC Secretary Collin O'Mara says it's a good way to start.

House co-sponsor of the new Bag Law, Bear democrat Valerie Longhurst says she's gone to the reusable canvas totes for her grocery shopping.

The law gives businesses almost a year to begin offering recycling and just about every business that hands out the plastic bags is required to participate."
