Do you shop at Publix?

Facing anti-plastic bag legislation nationwide, many stores have taken the initiative to reduce their plastic bag consumption voluntarily. Publix grocery store is one such retailer. Here is summary of many of the changes they have been making:
"We would be opposed to a ban on plastic bags," Publix's Patten said. "We have a strong recycling program and we are offering alternatives to plastic as well."
Publix has sold more than 10 million reusable cloth shopping bags at 99 cents each and has given more away to nonprofit groups, she said.
In its recycling program, Publix not only takes its own plastic shopping bags, but those from other stores as well, Patten said.
"We also take plastic dry cleaning bags, newspaper bags, plastic bread bags and the like," she said. "Last year we recycled 7,000 tons of plastic."
In addition, the grocery has bins for recycling newspapers."
It is shame though, that Publix is opposed to a plastic bag ban. Their programs are incredibly good - but only a true ban on all plastic bags will solve they future environmental problems caused by plastic bags. In the meantime, however, its nice to see retailers taking initiative in this area!! Good job Publix!
